A Glimpse into YEP 2026: Looking Back at the Spirited Kickoff between UPNVY and Temasek Polytechnic
YOGYAKARTA – Looking back at the vibrant kickoff of an extraordinary cross-border journey, UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta proudly hosted the Opening Ceremony for the International Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) - Youth Expedition Project (YEP) 2026 on Monday, March 30, 2026. Held at the main campus, this event marked the official integration of passionate students from UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta and Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore, embarking on a joint community development initiative.
To ensure our Singaporean guests felt right at home from day one, the ceremony featured a highly engaging and interactive Culture Introduction session. Led brilliantly by two interns from the Office of International Affairs (OIA), the presentation offered a deep yet lighthearted dive into the unique traditions, daily customs, and social norms of Yogyakarta.
The highlight of this session was an energetic interactive roleplay focusing on local etiquette. Students from Temasek Polytechnic eagerly practiced essential phrases of politeness (unggah-ungguh) in both Indonesian and Javanese. Laughter echoed across the hall as participants tried their hand at articulating traditional gestures of respect and courtesy such as saying "matur nuwun" (thank you) and "nyuwun sewu" (excuse me) which is an essential tools for their upcoming immersion into local communities.
Following the cultural orientation, the focus transitioned toward the academic and field objectives of the expedition. Dr. Sari Virgawati delivered a comprehensive Community Service Debrief, laying out the technical framework, project milestones, and the overarching vision of the KKN-YEP 2026 program. Dr. Sari emphasized the importance of sustainable development goals (SDGs) and community-driven innovation. Through this debrief, the combined student groups gained a clear roadmap of their responsibilities, transforming their initial excitement into a shared, focused blueprint for meaningful community impact.
Any remaining cultural distance completely evaporated during the exhilarating ice-breaking segment appropriately titled "WEFIE". Intentionally breaking down barriers, UPNVY and Temasek Polytechnic students were fully integrated into mixed collaborative groups. The objective was simple yet wildly entertaining. Groups had to race against time to execute various team-building tasks, culminating in group photos with highly unique, funny, and expressive poses. The "WEFIE" challenge instantly sparked a wave of collective joy, turning total strangers into synchronized teammates and setting a remarkably cohesive tone for the rest of their joint journey.
Though weeks have passed since that memorable day, looking back at the opening ceremony serves as a powerful reminder of the energy, unity, and mutual respect that defined the launch of YEP 2026. The partnership between UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta and Temasek Polytechnic stands as a testament to how international collaboration can foster not only professional community service but lifelong global friendships.
